At the same time with the professional desktop, Apple introduced the updated macOS 10.15 Catalina operating system at WWDC 2019. In addition to software optimization, the new OS received a number of completely new features, including support for the iPad as an external monitor, advanced device protection options, and a new iPhone synchronization mechanism for backing up and restoring data.
One of the key innovations of the desktop OS is the appearance of the Sidecar function, which allows you to use the iPad as a second wireless monitor for a Mac or a graphic tablet in combination with the Apple Pencil stylus. Apple cited the use of Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Illustrator, and the iWork office suite as use cases.
Another noticeable difference in the operating system from the previous revision was the abandonment of the single “media combine” iTunes in favor of separate applications Music, TV and Podcasts. Synchronization with the iPhone is now placed in the dashboard of the macOS itself.
The “On-Screen Time” feature on Mac is designed to help users efficiently manage time spent at the monitor, limiting the period of use of the device. To prevent the work from ending abruptly, the One more minute option warns you to save files or quit the game before ending a session. The updated family access settings provide parents with tools to monitor child use of the device.
The Voice Control technology is designed for users with disabilities replacing traditional input devices with voice control supported by Siri, while command processing is performed on the device itself. The feature is also available in iOS and iPadOS — it allows you to use mobile devices by performing even traditional actions such as tapping, swiping and scrolling with your voice.
The gatekeeper’s function is responsible for checking application security, and a new protection mechanism requires the user to confirm that programs can access his documents. All Mac models with the T2 security chip have the ability to block activation and anonymous search for a lost or stolen device using other Apple gadgets. Release macOS 10.15 Catalina will be held this fall.
