For several years, budget gaming laptops were built according to the same scheme: i5 or i7, 8 GB of RAM and the NVIDIA 50th series. But finally, an alternative configuration appeared. We are testing a new ASUS laptop and finding out who is now the king of the available segment.
“What else to shove in a laptop, if not i5 and NVIDIA?” , – you ask. Of course, a bunch of AMD components. The expansion of the mobile brand Ryzen has finally gone beyond the scope of office machines: the heart of the ASUS TUF FX505DY gaming became the Ryzen 5 3550H with the Vega 8 embedding, and the company added the discrete graphics Radeon RX 560X.
The processor is built on the architecture of Zen +. It has 4 physical cores, 8 threads, 4 megabytes of cache memory of the third level, the operating frequencies are from 2.1 to 3.7 GHz, depending on the load and the quality of cooling. The heat pack of the entire assembly is a modest 35 watts. A typical competitor in this price segment is the Intel Core i5-8300H.
In terms of performance, the Ryzen 5 3550H corresponds to a hotter Intel Core i7 7700HQ, that is, for modern games in Full HD, work with graphics, 3D and CAD-packages its capabilities will be enough for several years to come.
Graphics is computed by a hybrid of Vega 8 (8 GCN 4.0 blocks) operating at 1200 MHz and a stand-alone RX 560X (16 GCN 4.0 blocks) capable of accelerating to 1270 MHz. The first stores data in a simple RAM, works with a low load and in energy-efficient mode – from a battery. The second one has its own 4 GB GDDR5, it is connected in games or is used all the time if the laptop is plugged into an outlet – this depends on the usage scenario. Both GPUs can join forces in personnel analysis, but such cases are rare, because the application must be distributed within the framework of the DirectX 12 MultiGPU API.
The rest of the iron set is prosaic. 8 GB of RAM, but you can make 16 – under the plastic cover hidden classic SO-DIMM connectors without soldering. The drive depends on the configuration: somewhere NVME-SSD is installed under the system paired with a classic HDD, and in the modifications is more expensive – only SSD, but 500 GB.
How does it work?
Synthetic benchmarks allow you to evaluate the performance of iron and understand in which segment and against whom the novelty will play. The processor is a direct competitor to the good old i7 and the new four-core i5.
- FireStrike – 5497
TimeSpy – 1902 (1782 graphics, 3092 processor)
Ice Storm Extreme – 59 886
- CINEBENCH R15
- CPU – 757
CPU – Single core 145
- PCMARK 10
GPU performance is stuck somewhere between the two GTX 1050 – the regular and more powerful Ti. In some games you will have a choice: get beautiful, but cantilever 30 fps, or reduce the number of special effects for the sake of advantage over opponents. In others it is not necessary to sacrifice anything.
Pleasantly pleased with the cooling system. The sound of her – a noble rustling and low hiss, and performance – God forbid every budget notebook. Even 2 hours in Destiny 2 did not bring the device to throttling or uncomfortable temperatures – the keyboard and the top panel warmed up a bit, nothing more. Although now, consider summer.
But that's not all. If AMD used to sandbags for horse power consumption, now it's not possible to dig under Ryzen notebooks.
The novelty produced four hours of battery life at 2/3 of the display brightness, with active data transmission over the network and more than 30 tabs in the browser. If you suddenly do not know, budget gaming laptops in such a situation rarely stand a half to two hours.
All the rest
With performance, everything is clear: it does not set records, but it performs tasks with confidence. Tactile sensations of the device can be described in one word – “soundly”. Instead of flirting with aluminum foil and sandwiches from several different materials, the body was made of high-quality thick plastic with external texturing for metal. The keyboard is typical for ASUS laptops: the buttons are arranged according to the standard, they are pressed clearly. The touchpad (also plastic) on the accuracy of moving the cursor and gesture recognition is not inferior to the old “MacBooks” – a good sign.
But the sound does not differ in expressiveness: there is a volume reserve, the speakers do not wheeze, there is no interference in the audio section, but that’s all. Bass speakers lacking, the subwoofer is missing. So there are enough opportunities for serials, listening to news and unobtrusive music playback. Playing something serious is still better with headphones.
Saved and on the display: IPS-matrix on LED backlighting at maximum brightness hardly produces 220 cd / m2, although for comfortable work on a sunny day it is necessary from 270 and more. The response speed and color gamut do not allow making e-sports equipment or working tools of the photographer and designer from the TUF FX505. At the same time surprising factory calibration. Typically, inexpensive laptops have problems with color, brightness and white balance settings, but in this device the gamma curve and white point fall into all tolerances. Miracle, not otherwise!
The display does not shine, but it is almost perfectly tuned: it does not bluish, does not yellow, does not burn through shadows and bright areas.
ASUS TUF FX505 is a balanced and interesting notebook based on AMD hardware. He does not set records – he was not created for that. But it works quietly, efficiently and for a long time. The model will certainly appeal to anyone who does not want to lower a few salaries on a quality workhorse – the price starts from 50,000 rubles. Users for whom the words “top for their money” are not an empty sound. And to those to whom the 15-inch screen seems to be a frivolous statement – this is the 17-inch FX705DY with the same filling.
Usually "King of the Mountain" is assigned to the most powerful and featured devices. ASUS TUF FX505DY showed everyone that the road will be mastered by walking. It is not necessary to be a champion in order to conquer the w3bsit3-dns.com edition: it is enough just to not have critical flaws and be new at least in something.
