What could be better than a game about military equipment? Only a game in which technology even more. In Wargaming, we went further: by the May holidays both content and space were added – now you can drown your enemies on consoles. Check their durability?

If mainstream tanks do not suffer from a shortage of combat vehicles, then WoWS lacked large Soviet ships, one of the most important participants in the maritime theater of operations. From the side, the flaw looked strange: is it difficult to take and draw a pack of battleships for the red fleet? Yes, if we are talking about Wargaming, which is famous for its historical meticulousness and does not tolerate ad-libbing. We need drawings, photographs, documentation – otherwise no one will let the model into production.
And here the chronicle of the Second World War has planted the first mine. By the beginning of the conflict, the Land of the Soviets of the battleships was not so much, moreover, they were obsolete. Of their own – a lonely battleship "Gangut." In addition to him – an old reparation "Julio Cesare" (aka "Novorossiysk") and the British superdreadnought HMS Royal Sovereign, renamed "Arkhangelsk". They all found another World War. You understand that in the three antediluvian vessels in the MMO you can’t go far and you won’t collect the endgame worker.
I had to get out. Fortunately, design surveys were conducted in the USSR, although there was no time and money for the construction of new prototypes. And if there are calculations, it is possible to build a digital boat on them.
At least try. Game designers turned to archival drawings and historical documents. And here – the second prank: not only was the old paper kept somehow and much had to be literally collected, like a puzzle, so the efforts were also in vain. In the folders and tubes were raw projects, that is, search sketches. Build such a ship – it will either break in half, or sink under the weight of its own armor. Not only in reality, but also in the game.
Six write, two in mind
What to do? The weak would have dropped their hands. Wargaming employees had the determination to bring the Soviet sketches to mind. New ships were built around the alleged weapons – is it necessary to penetrate the enemy’s defense with something? A gun is always calculated around the projectile. Therefore, they designed new ships for World of Warships, starting from the laws of ballistics and the powders available at that time. They calculated the armor-piercing and high-explosive shells – they built a barrel that could withstand the necessary pressures, put the guns together, found a suitable tower. Here is the main caliber.
After – work with armor and available materials. Game designers enlisted the help of experienced shipbuilders. They took the technical assignment on the battleship, issued during the time of Stalin, chose the typical approaches of the Soviet school, combined into a project. So, gradually calculating one element after another, in general, the Soviet fleet went through a full cycle of this "rough" development. Of course, no one brought the calculations to the state of "take and build in full size" – limited to the parameters sufficient to build a virtual ship and launch it into digital production. Well, then – routine. Creating a three-dimensional model, drawing textures, checking, balancing and so on.
The result of long and painstaking work has become a line of "design" ships, which have a characteristic role in sea battles and fit into the overall gameplay balance. And most importantly, they do not contradict the history, physics, and capabilities of paper types.
World of Warships: Legends are not just “familiar ships, but for consoles” , but built on the same concepts and mathematical models of action with an eye to the “sofa gameplay” . Much has survived: almost all of the graphics and the overall design of the locations migrated from the PC version, just like the key mechanics.
Choose a ship, enter into battle, win, gain experience and silver, improve technique, get a new one. Sounds familiar?
Now imagine that you first take part in matchmaking for a few minutes, then immerse yourself in the game location, then tediously swim towards the intended appearance of the enemy … And all this after work, sitting on the couch. So sleep at the helm is not surprising. Therefore, every aspect of World of Warships: Legends was adapted to the features of the platform and gamers' habits.
Agreeing in a chat about the overall strategy of behavior on consoles is hard. On the whole, no one wanted to bore the audience with long preparations for battle. That is why the cards were reduced, and the groups of players themselves were located closer to each other. It takes less than a minute for the engine to take the first engine from the team to the engine room “full speed ahead” – all actions in the console version are about 1.5 times faster. Thanks to these changes, the management of the huge ship on the gamepad has become responsive and understandable. Battles are kept in constant tension – you need to act quickly, aggressively, constantly turn your head around, otherwise you will get a torpedo in the aft compartment.
Do you think Wargaming made the game more dynamic, screwed up the interface for TVs, is that all? Hardly! The console edition has a zest that turns "the same ships, and hurry up" into an independent work.
From now on, progress is tied not only to monstrous floating fortresses and brisk destroyers – now Captains have appeared.
Historical persons represent different sides of the conflict and possess a number of specific skills that can seriously pump your fleet. One sea wolf directs the guns better at the target, the other – it detects enemies before, the third one is famous for the ability to make the team reload faster the main caliber. In a word, something like “special teams”, familiar from the usual World of Warships, but in a more global sense: with pumping, development of perks and influence on your entire fleet.
Of course, the content in WoWS: Legends is still not enough. A dozen and a half of available ships and three factions are the slow but protected Americans, the shaky and nimble Japanese and the average throughout the British. However, transferring content from the PC version is not a problem, they will eventually catch up. But the lightning-fast search for opponents, fast loading and furious hacking in the sea are already today. And all this can be tested for free. The game already has enough opponents at all levels of development – from primary to endgame. And if it is hard to break through to the top of the PC release ratings, the story has not yet been written in Legends. Perhaps it is your name where there is a place.
The spring update presented the players with the long-awaited Soviet line of battleships, and the opportunity to sink the enemy lying on the sofa. Both are made conscientiously. Seven feet under the keel!
