Microsoft put an end to a series of rumors and leaks about the upcoming “default browser” update — the first Edge builds appeared on the network. Chips are new engine from Google, enhanced functionality and redesigned interface.
The available preview version of the updated Edge is a lot like Chrome. Microsoft is also working on adding Fluent Design style settings, with advanced tab settings and handwriting input expected in the future. In total, over 150 changes were made to the browser code.
In addition to the transition to the Chromium engine, the new Edge received support for numerous extensions for Chrome. Also declared synchronization of favorites (already available in the earlier version), history of visits and previously installed add-ons through a Microsoft account. Other enhancements include smooth scrolling of web pages, integration with Windows Hello, and stable touch keyboard operation.
“We work directly with the Google teams and the Chromium community and value collaborative and open discussions. Some features are not yet fully represented in the browser that you can install today, so stay tuned, ”said Joe Belfiore, corporate vice president of Microsoft.
The current English-language Edge assemblies are designed only for 64-bit Windows 10. In the future, the company plans to add Windows 8, Windows 7 and macOS to the list of supported OSs.
