Russian mobile operators continue to prepare for connecting subscribers using eSIM. Previously, users were able to test the novelty in pilot mode, and in the future they will receive the function of remotely transferring their subscriber number without physically replacing the SIM card and compulsory filling out a paper application.
According to the Kommersant publication, Tele2 announced the upcoming testing of the mobile number transfer function from its subscribers' eSIM to Rostelecom's eSIM. The company spoke about its initiative at a meeting of the working group of the Ministry of Communications with the participation of representatives of the “big four” and security agencies. In the future, innovation will allow subscribers to perform the procedure remotely without contacting the communications salon.
According to the source, the main obstacles for the spread of eSIM technology remain the requirements of the FSB for the introduction of domestic cryptography on the chip and the lack of a regulatory framework for remote identification of the owners of numbers.
“There are problems with remote subscriber identification. We need to refine the regulatory framework, which we will do together with the authorities concerned. Issued during the test, eSIM Tele2 numbers will continue to work, ”said Deputy Head of the Ministry of Communications and Mass Media, Oleg Ivanov.
Earlier, on May 15, the issuance of QR codes for the activation of electronic SIM cards in Tele2 salons was suspended at the request of the Ministry of Communications. At present, the Federal Security Service (FSB) is conducting an operational check on the chips of electronic SIM-cards of systems of operational investigative measures, information security and cryptography. Representatives of MegaFon, VimpelCom and MTS announced their readiness to switch to eSIM after solving legal problems with technology.
