Adults love, children love – whatever you say, and Mortal Kombat is all ages. Still: for 27 years, the planet has been observing the opposition of the Earth and the Outer World, admires takeoffs, is upset by falls. But what emotions does the 11th part of the popular action movie cause?
In the sea of various fighting games, Mortal Kombat has always occupied a special place. Cruel, funny, seemingly realistic, but at the same time indescribably cartoony. It was even more exciting to follow its development, from 2D to 3D, than to push opponents on the Scorpion's spear – all the more so since the series did not immediately find itself in the new dimension.
It happened in 2011, when NetherRealm studio actually re-invented the game: it added a long storyline campaign and proved that MK really has a place in the 21st century. Since then, the authors have experimented in every way, improving the familiar formula, simultaneously exchanging for a superheroic in the Injustice cycle – and now the crown of evolution fell on the shelves.
At first, the thriller causes a completely wild delight. I am glad about the unusually intelligible training regime that introduces all the mechanics, both old and new. Delights the Hollywood storyline with a non-original but promising start. Amusing dialogue before the fights – like a trifle, but so many emotions! And this is not to mention the new Crypt (with Shang Zong as a conductor!), Fascinating command Time Towers and finally savory, beautiful animations. On their background, the antics from the previous parts are a shameful misunderstanding.
Fatality is also almost genius: cruel, savage, but not disgusting (as it was in X). Delicate balance!
In short, the developers and pulls praise. It seems that everything is done as it should and even flawlessly – as far as possible in 3D-fighting game from the western studio. But the key word here is “it seems . ”
A few years after the captivity of Shinnok, a new conflict flared up in the Mortal Kombat universe. Having suffered from attacks from other dimensions, Lord Reiden, the once good-hearted patron of the Earth, and now the ruthless tyrant, declares war on the aggressors from the Outer World. At the cost of many lives, he even wins the battle … but it was not there. To help the villains comes Kronika, the mistress of time – and her anger knows no bounds.
For centuries and millennia, it influenced the fate of mortals, unwound time, patiently changed events and now went out of the shadows to the decisive battle, taking with them guests from days gone by. Past, present and future are literally intertwined – only the God of Thunder and his servants are able to stop the villain and restore order.
After a couple of shock heads, the plot degrades almost to the level of the film “Mortal Kombat 2: Extermination” . You look at the cutscene – and in your head immediately passages appear in the spirit of "And then, out of nowhere …!" . Logic, common sense – forget it. Instead of them, there is a rewriting of the canons of the series and shameless grand pianos from the bushes in the spirit of old cartoon series from the CTC channel. We invented such stories back in the 90s at school breaks. But "shot" what is happening really in a big way. What in childhood was a fantasy, finally gained flesh and blood, a real Hollywood gloss. Naive, but with a soul.
Having settled down in the final of the campaign against the ominous Chronicles, you run to check other content – and you are even more disappointed. After all, with additional modes, too, everything is not thank God. The notorious Towers, for example, suffer from surges of complexity and indiscriminate monotony. Wanted mischief in the spirit of Mortal Kombat 2011, with fights without hands and other inventive challenges? Bypass.
Dodge rockets / arrows / kunas / lasers until your fingers fall off.
Even an island with treasure – and that instead of a pleasant tour of places of military glory comes down to a boring grind. Came for fatality and brutality? Look for them in the chests that open for three types of in-game currency. And there are no means – drag yourself to conquer money and souls in trials, almost always dishonorable, and sometimes completely impassable without the help of cheating objects. Those, in turn, are issued at random – you quickly get tired of this endless cycle.
That good, which Mortal Kombat conquers in the first hours, fades against the background of the routine for the sake of content and customization. Some jewelry and finishing, of course, give the purchase for their blood (transferring them to time crystals, if they are not enough with victories). However, the store is poor and unpredictable, because the stock changes every 24 hours. Yes, and the binding of everything and everything to online frankly scares: as soon as it is turned off, the game runs the risk of losing the Tower and the Crypt. They do not work without an internet connection. It remains only the action – insanely beautiful, vigorous, with well-thought-out rules … and offensive roughness.
Of course, NetherRealm did the work on the bugs. Balanced super techniques in such a way that they are not spammed (correct handling of Fatal Blow is an art in itself). Added information about frames in the menu, so that professionals wouldn’t have to guess on the coffee grounds. They gave the opportunity to send into battle AI-fighters, so that they earn money and improvements almost without the participation of the player. The once crooked netcode now works fine – in any case, regular matches do without slowdowns and connect what they need.
All this is fine, but global problems, annoying for many years, have not gone away.
Hitboxes, for example, are still unpredictable – the uppercut works at a distance of two steps, then suddenly flies past at the most inopportune moment. And how to forget the Fatal Blow, able to reach even in a jump (when the body of the fighter is almost behind the back of the enemy)? Or unlockable grabs ? Something will surely be corrected with patches, although why was the beta then?
Mortal Kombat 11 is a loud game, popular and, perhaps, mandatory to purchase. In some endings, there is more fantasy and talent here than in a pile of pretentious authorial creations. And time for a novelty flies faster than Reiden's lightning. But the need for a long, tedious grind, as well as the realization that after shutting down the servers, the game will lose a substantial portion of content, spoils the impression of a long acquaintance. Even if these problems are solved in the future, NetherRealm has already suffered a loss of reputation.
Who wants to just push the buttons (or cut a person in half with a Scorpion chain), that MK11 definitely looks bright. Beauty and cruelty she does not take away, and in the sense of humor you can not refuse the authors. But how much content there is here: modes, equipment, receptions, bonuses – it is as insidiously hidden behind a many-hour grind.
Awesome visual: characters, arenas, animations – everything is worked out to the smallest detail. Multifaceted combat system, which is interesting to study – including through the most intelligible training mode. Convenient multiplayer and solidly made "King of the Hill" hooked for tens of hours, and the content for a loner is enough for years to come. In general – the ideal convivially entertaining.
A promising story campaign is replete with delusions and frankly illogical moments (even by the standards of the series!). The Towers of Time and Crypt are the personification of a blunt, completely merciless grind. Microtransactions (for the time being?) Are few, but they will most likely repel the purists of the genre. Most single content requires online — be careful not to shut down servers years later. The hitboxes are still naughty and some of the mechanic works through the stump-deck. The PC version was raw.
