Everyone is familiar with the three pillars of Wargaming: World of Tanks, World of Planes and World of Warships have captured PCs a long time ago, and the Tanks also crawled out of their limits. Not so long ago, left the usual harbor and "Ships" – for the consoles came out a special edition of World of Warships: Legends. Checking what has changed in sea battles and whether these innovations have benefited.
Beautiful and fictional
Machines on the “small forward”, the battleship slowly bends around the waters full of torpedoes. The weather is deteriorating, visibility is zero. The multi-ton colossus rises above the waves and collapses the whole mass of water. A tropical storm is not a toy. Especially in the midst of the most important battle: the “Reds” must again snatch victory from the “Blue”. An enemy ship was spotted in the sight, the guns were ready for a long time, all that was left was to point the target, select the lead on the course … Lays the ears from the volley. But the enemy cannot be envied at all: the armor has been pierced, the deck is on fire, the engines are up. Bach, another salvo. Tilting the feed implement – and more. The vessel is sunk.
In the spectacle and the effect of immersion, the novelty cannot be denied: the sea depths eagerly devour steel monsters, guns spew flame again and again and spit with land mines, and the cannonade is accompanied by an elegant roar.
Alas, it was not possible to survive this battle – brisk destroyers besieged a clumsy battleship from all sides, squeezed into a vise by launching torpedoes, and a well-aimed shot of the same heavy enemy damaged the “citadel” – the main protective superstructure. After the desktop version, such a dynamic development of events is unsettling. And the matter is not even in the unusual control or inexperience of the allies. World of Warship: Legends is just another game – the difference is the sea.
Same as the one but the other
In general, the mechanics are certainly the same. Leave in neutral waters, shoot accurately, get money and experience. The reward is spent on some upgrades in order to earn money to acquire others faster – such a vicious circle. But no one complains! Indeed, for the sake of the process, they come here: to win, to get a more powerful gun, to punish all those who spoiled blood an hour earlier. The problem is that playing the desktop version on consoles is simply impossible, so the gameplay of battles has been completely rewritten.
If the testers were not satisfied with any moment, the team was looking for solutions, mercilessly sacrificing old concepts.
The first feature of the game on consoles is control. Instead of a keyboard and mouse – a gamepad. It was not enough just to reassign the keys: if destroyers and cruisers willingly accelerate and change course on command from the controller, then it is no easier to give orders to the battleship than to control such a colossus in reality. I called the wheelhouse, said “Full speed ahead!” , And there they switch for now, while the engines gain momentum, while the ship moves from its place …
Making flagships faster means breaking the balance between classes. And also violate the compliance of gaming and historical characteristics of technology. Therefore, the authors took a radical, but effective solution: they sped up the entire gameplay by about 50%. It became easier for the players who didn’t own high-level equipment to retract, the “middle peasants” simplified pumping to the endgame, and the management of the fleet heavyweights became more responsive and direct. As a result, everything is in gain, the balance is met.
Other problems were solved in a similar way: they slightly simplified the locations, moved the points where the opponents appeared closer to each other (it’s still not enough time to discuss the strategy of the round for a long time and thoroughly discuss the strategy of the round), and sped up matchmaking. In general, they made every effort to shoot at enemies as much as possible and delay them more.
Burst, piled on, bought improvements, learned new technologies, ran to play tricks on.
But not all changes have benefited. Of course, the interface needed to be adapted for displays of different diagonals: someone had a full-wall TV at home, and some connected the PS4 and Xbox to the usual 22-inch monitors – and both should please. Something was cut off successfully, somewhere they guessed with a redesign … But along with the visual excesses, some useful signatures went under the knife. For example, they do not write on consoles, for which they gave you medals after the battle. Fortunately, Legends is still in early access, there are no critical errors, and the developers will certainly have time to make the interface shine to a full launch.
The word Legends in the title came not for nothing: the game has another valuable resource – the legendary commanders, written off from real historical figures. Of course, they are not introduced for beauty – everyone has advantages that can and should be developed. Take a specialist to battle, gain experience, spend it on various improvements. And the most interesting thing is to look for “cheat” combinations from the right ship and captain.
There are many possibilities, and everyone will find a recipe for their style of play. I like the pragmatic approach – you can compensate for the shortcomings of a class or a particular vessel with the merits of a captain. Love the risk? Nobody forbids to go for broke and leave vulnerable points at the cost of a noticeable improvement in certain characteristics. But bonuses are not always useful – for example, a torpedoes specialist will not give anything to an artillery cruiser.
World of Warships: Legends – not just a transfer with minor modifications, but meaningful and high-quality processing of classic mechanics. The game has become more dynamic, freer, more complex and unpredictable, and gamers have new opportunities to customize the gameplay for themselves, including the use of captains. Now, PC players WoWS is a reason for envy. If the desktop "ships" seemed to you boring and slow, Legends – your choice.
The game in almost every aspect of the original and more vigorous. Even despite the early access and the difference in the amount of available content.
The interface needs polishing, and the PC boyars will now whine that they want features from Legends.
