Samsonmarch is an engineer in an American firm for designing and manufacturing various devices, so he has experience in developing gadgets. The idea to create a smart watch appeared last year, but only in January, the enthusiast took up its embodiment. To begin with, he created the design of the future accessory in the free Fusion 360 program. According to the author, the square case, like the Apple Watch, is much more practical because it allows you to display more information on the screen, but he likes round watches more.
The case was printed on a 3D printer, bought for $ 160. As materials, he used 70% plastic and 30% wood dust, so the tactile and visual watch is made of wood. After that, the engineer took up the creation of a printed circuit board with electronics. He independently designed her design, placing the battery, processor and other components.
As soon as the board was ready, it was necessary to connect a round TFT LCD display with a resolution of 240×240 pixels and fix it all in the case. The screen is covered with tempered glass.
The engineer also made a station that charges the watch through a pair of contacts on the back. It connects to the network or computer using a standard USB cable.
For the full operation of the device, Samsonmarch wrote its own freeRTOS based operating system. He added support for all the features he needed, such as the ability to connect to the iPhone via Bluetooth, display incoming messages from a smartphone, activate the screen when turning the wrist, and others. According to the creator, the clock runs on a single charge for about a week.
It took Samsonmarch a little more than two months to create its own smart watches and only $ 50 without taking into account the cost of a 3D printer. The enthusiast is not going to make any money on his device: instead, he published in open access on GitHub all the program code and drawings for a 3D printer.
