The age of the smartphone is short and usually takes 1-2 years. Then the owner changes the device to a new one, and the outdated model sells, gives or throws out. The process is natural, but imperfect. MTS offers an alternative in which the transition from one gadget to another is simple and painless, and most importantly – beneficial. We checked how it works.
Essence and Math
The idea of "Subscribing to a smartphone" is extremely simple. Instead of paying the full cost of the device, the buyer pays a subscription fee for its use within 12 or 24 months. When this period expires, the owner will have a choice – to return the mobile phone and take a new one under the same conditions or pay off the rest of the price in three to six months, leaving the gadget permanently.
Particularly pleased that with this balance the buyer does not pay the full official cost of the smartphone. On the contrary, the calculation is made at reduced rates – depending on the model and the current shares in MTS.
For example, take a subscription to the iPhone XS with 64 GB of memory, which officially costs 80,990 rubles. The price tag hurts the wallet, but “Smartphone subscription” softens the blow. It does not just divide the payment into monthly installments for two years, as in the case of a loan or installment plan, but also removes part of the cost. That is, having subscribed for the same two years, you will pay 2,400 rubles a month – when you make an installment plan, let alone a loan, the payments would be larger.
If you stick to the device with all your heart, you can keep it for yourself – just keep paying the same monthly amount for three or six months. This is not necessarily about the iPhone – the buyer is free to choose any device presented in the salons of "MTS". Employees will immediately calculate the size of monthly payments and answer all your questions. The theory is tempting, but what is the process in business? We tear off the editorial staff from the working perch and send it to the salon – let it test for itself.
We check in practice
Of course, the first question I had when I came to the salon was which smartphones participate in the action? The consultant, traditionally right there, readily replies: all presented in the shop window. To subscribe to a cheap smartphone, of course, to no avail. I came for an iPhone, and not a budget SE old man – how about a 64 GB XS? On it just promised a good discount.
Kirill, an employee of the salon, quickly figured that if I wanted to take the device for two years, I would have to pay 2429 rubles a month for it. After the calculation, Kirill asked for a passport for paperwork, and then a few minutes intently studied something on the computer. So that I’m not nervous, he explained: since legally we draw up installments, we need to send an application to MTS Bank. There is no outstanding mortgage on me, all the loans have been paid off regularly, so after five minutes the documents were ready. In parallel, they issued a “SIM card” – I did not have a card of this operator.
Mobile phone carried and handed immediately after the signing of all the papers. And just inserting a SIM-card, I remembered that I actually hadn’t paid a penny, although I already use my smartphone as my own. Cyril reassured: the first payment will be only in a month, and during this time you need to replenish the personal account with the necessary amount. Thanks, as they say, and goodbye.
Now – about what advantages and disadvantages of the solution should be paid attention to before making a “Subscription to a smartphone”.
Convenience and additional benefits
For convenience of payment, a SIM-card is offered with a tariff to choose from: “Tariff”, “Smart”, “Our Smart” or “X”. If there is already a SIM card from MTS, you do not need to change it – just use one of these tariffs. To pay for a subscription, you just need to replenish the balance by the specified amount – it will be charged off monthly with the monthly fee. In other words, no trips to the bank and to the terminals. Everything is as simple as with ordinary communication services.
Of course, the devices are not "locked up" – nothing prevents to connect them to other operators. True, this is not so profitable, because for the entire duration of the Subscription to a Smartphone an additional discount of 10% is offered – regardless of the tariff. In my case, the monthly payment for the iPhone XS for 24 months will be 2879 rubles – 2429 rubles for a smartphone and 450 rubles for the "X" tariff.
What is the catch? It is not, but there are things that must be clearly understood before the contract.
First of all, legally it is still installments. Therefore, to interrupt the execution of the contract and give the smartphone ahead of time, refusing further payments, will not work. In any case, you have to repay the entire agreed amount to the end. And why then return the gadget?
It is also impossible to change models to newer ones ahead of time. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S10 is not the best option to choose from – suddenly, in the fall, you want to switch to Note10? Then you have to buy it separately. And where can we discard the spring “top ten”, and even with a monthly subscription – donate, sell? … In any case, one cannot get away from paying the full cost. In other words, we need to clearly understand what kind of device is required for the next year or two – in this sense, the iPhone was perfect for us: they update it once a year and everyone is happy.
Finally, what if I accidentally smash a smartphone? Cyril detailed the essence. Naturally, during the operation, the gadget will lose its former gloss: it will be scratched, rubbed and so on. In this form, it will take back without any problems. But the cracks on the glass and the case, broken display, chips – for this they throw a penalty of up to 30% of the cost of the device. The exact amount is negotiated in each case. Kirill suggested just in case to take additional insurance at MTS tariffs. I preferred the non-slip case.
Instead of luring customers with hateful loans at MTS, they came up with a transparent and efficient subscription system. Formally, this is an installment plan, but its rules are clear and simple, and most importantly – beneficial to the client. No one is tied up: you can return the smartphone or keep it for yourself, paying a little extra. And without cheating, because all the conditions are stipulated, as they say, "on the shore."
