Xiaomi and OPPO almost simultaneously presented a new way to get rid of the notorious “hooks” in the screens of smartphones – both companies showed prototypes of gadgets, the front camera of which was located under the display. Today, Xiaomi shared the features of the technology and told how exactly the innovative function will be implemented in the brand devices.
Vice President Xiaomi Wang Xiang posted on Twitter the details of how the technology works – according to him, the company used a proprietary display made of special low-reflective glass. The area of the OLED screen in the area of the camera when the shooting mode is activated becomes transparent, passing light onto the sensor of the 20-megapixel selfie camera, and at the same time performing the functions of a lens.
The release date of the first commercial devices with subscreen location of the front camera is not announced. It is expected that the frameless devices of the Mi line with an increased usable display area will be presented as early as next year.
